Food Forest #3 – Carmarthenshire
1 acre food forest and 35 acre woodland
Summary
I acquired a new holding of 37 acres of pasture and woodland in West Wales in 2022. On this land I am starting my third food forest, and will likely forest the majority of existing fields. Here’s hoping that this food forest grows faster as there are areas here that are much more sheltered and south-facing than my previous two food forests, (which are still growing, though subject to substantial weather).Tagged: Food Forest, Mental Health, Permaculture
What is a Food Forest?
A food forest, also called a forest garden, is a diverse planting of edible plants that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in nature. Food forests are designed to be thought of in 3 or 4 dimensions, and very efficient at producing food and habitat.
Why plant a third Food Forest?
I planted my first food forest on my dad’s land. The second I planted at my smallholding. Both of these locations are relatively high above sea level for Wales, and ask of the trees that they battle quite serious winds and exposure.
This new piece of land I’ve purchased has a very sheltered spot which gets plenty of sun and is south facing. It’s also more than half the altitude, so generally gets much less weather.
I’m hoping that this new food forest, nestled in amongst other native broadleaf woodland, will fair better, and grow faster, than my other two. Likely nature will just teach me different lessons here.
And also, the world categorically needs more food forests.
