Explorations in making Comics
Summary
Graphic storytelling was a huge part of what helped me through the dark years where I had severe burnout.Like oil painting, drawing comics frees up my thinking in some way I can’t explain. It seems, to me, a perfect counterweight to the overly controlled hyper abstract intellectualisms of software engineering, (or maybe it’s just Autism spectrum stuff).
Comics?
Graphic storytelling was a huge part of what helped me through the dark years where I had severe burnout. I devoured work by Jean Giraud (Moebius), Kirchner,
Clowes, Hanselmann, Druillet, Woodring, DeForge, Burns, and I still do whenever new work comes out (I kind of burned through their entire lists!) I loved the authenticity, the directness, the unique ability of visual storytelling to let me feel things.
I always drew, and though I have no illusions that my drawings are superb, I continue to find it an excellent means for me to express. Like oil painting, drawing comics frees up my thinking in some way I can’t explain. It seems, to me, a perfect counterweight to the overly controlled hyper abstract intellectualisms of software engineering, (or maybe it’s just Autism spectrum stuff).
Either way, I’ve made a handful of comics over the years, and will continue to. These are just for me, and I revel in the fact that unlike my business stuff, there is no end-gaining involved at all. I share them here for the hell of it. Perhaps one day I’ll make enough of them to risk sharing the lot.
Sovereign
This is the first part of a comic I made some years ago. I drew this in ink, scanned, coloured and laid out the text.
Rise
A silly little story about work and relationships.
